Rising fuel price volatility is improving perceptions of EV affordability, with more drivers recognising they can be cheaper to run than petrol and diesel cars.
However, willingness to switch remains flat, as concerns about local charging infrastructure continue to hold people back.
More people say their council is doing badly than well at installing public chargers, reinforcing a lack of confidence in local provision.
Clear regional and urban–rural divides are emerging within the rollout, creating a growing risk of a two-tier transition as the 2030 phase-out approaches.

Statement: Update to Drive Smart on the Motability Scheme

Drive Smart was introduced in September 2025 to support safer driving and manage rising insurance costs on the Motability Scheme.
We have heard clearly from customers that Drive Smart caused some concern and has affected how they use their vehicle. Based on that feedback, we have taken the decision to pause the rollout of Drive Smart.

Motability Operations and Nissan announce strategic British-built Vehicle-to-Grid partnership to help reduce EV running costs

Motability Operations and Nissan will explore how Vehicle-to-Grid technology could help reduce electricity costs for EV drivers.

The partnership centres on the British-built Nissan LEAF, supporting UK manufacturing and jobs in Sunderland.

Vehicle-to-Grid allows electricity stored in an EV battery to be exported back to the grid at times of high demand, helping to manage energy use more efficiently.
