As of the end of September 2024, there were 815,000 customers on the Motability Scheme across the United Kingdom.
The average age of our customers is 52 years old.
Around 60% of our customers are female.
Our customer insight tells us that 42% have a household income of less than £20,000.
Around three quarters of our customers drive a petrol and diesel vehicle. In 2024, the number of people driving an electric vehicle doubled to 70,000.
How the Scheme helps our customers
80.4% of our customers say the Scheme improves their access to health services.
21.2% of Motability Scheme users report improved job opportunities due to their vehicle, enabling them to enter or sustain employment.
Customers using the Scheme increase their working hours by an average of 14 per week, aligning with the drive to increase economic participation.
Our customers give us a 9.5/10 average satisfaction score.
Switching to electric vehicles - customer insight
The UK is switching to electric vehicles (EVs), with 80% of all new vehicles sold running on an electric battery by 2030.
62% of our customers aren't confident that EV range is suitable and have "range anxiety"
72% of customers aren’t confident about public charging. 50% of disabled people rely on public charging.
60% say the upfront and running costs put them off choosing an EV

“The Motability Scheme provides 815,000 customers with independence to access work, education, healthcare and the ability to contribute to the economy and play an active role in society.
“The Scheme has a major impact on the wellbeing of disabled Scheme customers and also supports the UK economy by addressing transport accessibility. According to Oxford Economics, 21.2% of Scheme users reported improved job opportunities due to their vehicle with individuals able to work an average 14 additional hours per week due to the Scheme. Similarly, the Motability Scheme supports the UK economy, contributing £4.3 billion to UK GDP and underpinning 34,000 jobs across the UK.”
