Andrew Miller, CEO of Motability Operations and Nigel Fletcher, CEO of the Motability Foundation write for The Times newspaper

Sir,

We disagree with your leading article (“Getting Real”, Sep 3). Motability isn’t a licence to scam, it’s a licence to freedom and independence for disabled people.

Nine in ten working disabled people say the scheme helps them to stay in employment, and on average their vehicle enables them to work an additional two days a week.

Scrapping Motability or making it more expensive would make the challenge of supporting more disabled people into work even harder.

People priced out of the Motability scheme would keep their disability benefit, so welfare spending would not fall.

Moreover, new VAT costs would also put at risk the £300 million a year in tax revenue being raised from the Scheme since the autumn budget last year.
