To help tackle this issue, we have introduced six beehives at our Edinburgh office and have been encouraging employees to don their beekeeper suits and get involved.
Back in July, our employees based in Edinburgh had the opportunity to get involved with a spot of lunchtime beekeeping as part of a new wellbeing initiative - and it created a real buzz!
The experience is led by Ross Main from Main’s Apiaries who gave our budding beekeepers the chance to escape from behind their screens, connect with nature, and have a crash course in beekeeping all at once.
Ross said: “Our ‘Bees for Business’ scheme offers companies like Motability Operations a stress-free and sustainable approach to meeting environmental, societal, and corporate responsibility goals in a way that is fun, unique and tangible. The benefits of this initiative are already evident, and I’m delighted the team has embraced it so enthusiastically!”
The hives were introduced over two years ago and are now home to a thriving population of around 300,000 bees, diligently producing honey throughout the year. The honey production process helps pollinate nearby plants and flowers, contributing to a healthy local ecosystem.
Once the bees have worked their magic by autumn, staff will have the opportunity to take home some honey straight from the hives. The honey produced will be sold in the Edinburgh office, with all the proceeds going to charity.
Dija Pandor is a Senior Digital Communications Manager at Motability Operations, based in Edinburgh and attended the most recent beekeeping event. She enjoyed the session and shared her thoughts on the experience:
"I never realized how much goes into beekeeping! I learned so much about the structure of the bee hives, the inner working bees and how they benefit the local and wider ecosystem. It was also a great opportunity to connect with colleagues outside of the usual work setting.”
Motability Operations is committed to championing staff wellbeing while also ensuring it remains dedicated to protecting the local environment.
